How To Dance Like A Nigerian Lecturer

Lecturing in Nigerian universities is pretty easy(once you've gotten the job though), you just have to follow the following rules I listed below (in no particular order). And you must take these rules seriously if you want to succeed as a Lecturer/Professor in the university

#1 Speak Gibberish Always: You are the Professor - you went to MIT, Stanford, Chelsea FC, University of Ife... And they are just students. Where have they been anyways? What do they know?...
Do not speak in plain English that they will ever understand because if you do, they won't see you as a special person.
When the "over sabi" (the inquisitive) students tries to ask you a question, Scream out loud (this is very important) and say something like "How the hell did you get into this university? You must be a fraud".... (it works all the time)

#2. Frown Always: Whenever you are in class "teaching" do not ever  make any attempt to simper. You must look like the devil because if you don't, your students will not take you seriously. You need to put up a frown always, so they will be scared to death that they would just nod at everything you say and not ask you any question you didn't prepare for.

#3. Fail Students At Will: If more than half of the class passes your course, then you are not a great teacher. You must set your "standards" very high that even God might not scale through.... For example: if a student doesn't solve it the way you did in class, fail him/her. Is he trying to be smarter than you are or what?

You have bragging rights when you fail enough students. It sounds cool to tell your fellow professors that "ha over 50 students registered for my course and only 5 passed". You never can tell you might be nominated for the position of the Vice-Chancellor if you fail more students.

Forget the sarcasm in this article, these happens in our schools especially in our universities. I experienced "all of that" and many went through worse- we all different crazy stories to tell.

Although there are few (less than 2%) lecturers that are actually teaching the way they are meant to,But they are completely overshadowed by the bad ones. And it is a pity that the  system only recognizes the bad ones and encourages them ahead of those that are really teaching.

What do you think is the way out? I love to hear your crazy experiences here too.

What Is Killing Our Creativity?

So I got series of attacks on my personality from some people that read my controversial post (you may check it out here if you have not read it).

But this article is not about "all of that". It is not controversial in any way and it is about something important and serious to humanity and it is something that has been bothering me for couple of years now....

When God created man, he did in his image. And when you take a look at nature and the beautiful things it is made of, you will clearly see (if you don't know already) that the creator is creative and it is only logical to say man has the potential to be creative too.

But what is really happening to us? Why do we find it hard to tap into and harness this creativity? Creativity (in my definition) is the act of making something happen, out of nothing. The act of turning crazy ideas into reality.... What is killing this creativity?

Did We Outgrow Creativity?

We were all born creative. In fact many of us were given pencils and crayons when we were young and we drew and colored our world with them. We were not afraid of what people thought about what we drew. We didn't care whether or not it was "rubbish" to them... We drew anyways.

But as we grew, things started changing. We became more scared of what people will say or think about what we do. We became scared that we end up not doing anything.... Or

Did Our Parents Have Anything to do with it?

I happened to crash into this part of the world when toys were considered luxury for kids and it was only "rich" people that bought toys for their kids. Unfortunately, my parents didn't happen to fall into that category. But interesting, I didn't regret any of that, because as little as I was then, I improvised. I remember creating motor cars with sticks and crowns of soda bottles. I also did some amazing stuffs too that I've forgotten.
But I remember my mother beating the hell out of me almost everyday because I was always covered in mud. I think she beat creativity out of me too because in a bid to escape the wrath of my mother,  I (as little as I was then) became very conscious of myself. I had stopped playing in the mud with my "motor cars" -and it stopped being fun for me because I was no longer free to play the way I wanted. It even got worse to the point where my friends left me.... For some of us, it didn't end at that, our parents even forced certain career paths on some of us. And I think many of us can relate to these experiences... Or

Is it School?

In school we were/are being taught to cram, do things in certain ways  if we want to get good grades. And if you get an answer wrong, you are punished severely. We become scared to ask the teacher questions because we don't want to be laughed at just the way the teacher laughed at Jide last week when he asked why 1+1=2.
The system is too bad that we are just taught what to do without telling us why we need to do them... Too bad that it doesn't give room for mistakes... Or

Is it our addiction to respect or religion, is it the devil or the angels, is it the technological advancement...

There are so many things killing our creativity and it is good to take these things into consideration, but the most important thing is to reconnect ourselves back to this creativity that has been deposited in us right from the onset.

Think like an Adult, Act like a kid... Let people tag you crazy -all ideas were crazy at some point....

Make mistakes. Learn from them. Make better mistakes.

Don't be scared of what people will say about your ideas. Just do them any way.

Why You Need To Join The #Anti Bullshit Religion

Our interpretation of religion is bullshit and the fact that we are so much addicted to this interpretation is killing us.

A couple of months ago I was asked by a friend if I was religious or spiritual and which one works better and what my beliefs are? My answers came as a shock to him because I don't think he has heard anything like it and they were controversial. So I decided to draft out a thesis on how we are getting it all wrong when it comes religion and why it is bullshit.

But before I continue, I like you to know that I am a christian and I attend church services when I have the "time" to. And I am not religious, I consider myself spiritual and the only thing I believe in is faith.

Now to the article, I'd like to make it clear that faith and religion are completely different (there is a significant difference between faith and religion).

Religion was invented by people to get other people to do what they want. And it is only a useful tool when it provides a construct that re-in forces our need for hope and faith.

And faith is something fundamentally different, I don't know any words that goes with faith, or practices that goes with faith. Faith doesn't give a fuck about religion.

Faith is something deep within our genetic codes that brings with it hope. And it is faith, the practice of believing and connecting and being open and that is what I think of when I think of spirituality.

When I think spirituality, I don't think 90 days fasting and prayers, I don't think night vigils, I don't think traveling to Mecca to become an Alhaji... I don't think any of those stuffs, because they aren't spiritual (don't bite me), they're plainly religious.... Not saying they don't make sense though.

I don't really give a fuck about what your beliefs are or who you think is God or who isn't. And I also don't care that you are in a group with people of similar beliefs- religion.

But what doesn't make sense and irks me most is when you and your group treat others (people not in your group) differently.

You refuse to connect with them and you even go extra lengths by killing them because their are not willing to join your group (after forcing your beliefs on them). Or because they are in another group that doesn't mirror your own beliefs.... That's BULLSHIT!

That is a wrong interpretation of religion. And if this is how religions are meant to be, then religion is bullshit. I'd rather not be in any religion or better still create my own religion, the Anti-Bullshit religion.

I would rather create a religion where  I'm living spiritually whenever I'm doing my work. And when I do my work better which involves dancing with fear and mostly when I do it more generously, I feel like the person I hope to be.

An Anti-Bullshit religion where no one say words like "you are doing this religiously wrong". Or "you are not like us, therefore we do not like you". Or "we would not give you dignity or respect"... Because words like these  are hurtful and dangerous and some of the worst thing people do to one another.

An Anti-Bullshit Religion where we live mindfully, and find space for ourselves to connect with other people.... Now that is what spirituality means and I think that is how we are meant to live.

Break the status-quo, respect the other people's beliefs even if they are shitty, connect with them and create something that matters.

What Story Is Your Idea Telling People?

We are past that stage where you can come up with a "shitty" idea and spice it up with ads and force it on people. People/ the market is becoming more wise everyday because of the unlimited opportunities flying around.

One of the challenges I came accross in my first start up was getting people to buy into the idea. It was very difficult because the idea was rigid and doesn't have a great story it tells people. So the biz crashed before a year after all.

Don't just assume your idea is great and that all you have to do is market it to people. Marketing doesn't work that way anymore. That kind of marketing is dead (and may its soul rest in peace). The real marketing starts with the idea itself. Ask your self the following questions before you start designing a business model or marketing campaign for your idea:

* Is This Idea Worth Sharing
* What Story Is This Idea Telling That Will Resonates With My Target Market (People that really Matters)-

If your the answer to the first question is NO, that idea is not worth spending a dollar on, Move on.

But if the idea is worth sharing, you need to now invest more time figuring how to create a platform where it can be spread easily- by creating a story that your market (doesn't have to be everybody) can relate to and are willing to tell their friends and enemies.

It is when you have solved this that you can move on to the next level.

Take a look at these brands Google, Amazon, Apple, Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Fiverr, Toyota. They didn't force themselves on us through ads. Instead they created and shared stories that we resonate with....

Your idea is shit if it doesn't tell a great story... Don't waste another second on that idea and move on.

PS: If you are a small biz owner or a startuper, you should see this article It is worth sharing too.

PPS: Share this article with at least 5 people (let us save the planet from shitty ideas).

#DearStartuper: The Next Big Thing For Start-Up Owners

Starting a business especially when you know little about businesses is very difficult - drafting out your business model, looking out for investors/VCs to invest in your business, Building a great team.... E.t.c

We could really make do with some advice- advice from experts, from fellow startupers like us who have taken a leap and are already doing what we intend.

When I started my first business, I literally didn't know sh*t - everything seemed so complicated. I never knew what business plans meant, I never knew anything about getting investors. I hard to learn (and I'm still learning) certain things the hard way.

So I thought it would be could if we (this tribe of startupers) start a project where we can share ideas on how to grow our businesses effectively.

What Is This Project?

#DearStartuper is a mentoring program that ¡help entrepreneurs/start-up owners to get answers  to questions they are likely to face in their business.

#DearStartuper will be launched as a twitter live chat that will bring together small business owners across Africa and the world to discuss issues relating to running and growing a business.

Every Sunday I will be conducting live interviews with noted Start-up experts, where they'd share there struggles and how they overcame certain challenges in their businesses.

The guest types answers to questions using their twitter accounts and other startupers/small biz owners can join into the conversation by using the hashtag #DearStartuper to chime in with answers as well.

Goal Of #DearStartuper: The primary goal of this project is to end small business failure by creating a start-up community where startupers can get the resources they need for the growth of their business and still be able to connect and share fresh ideas with like minds.

How Do I Become Part Of This Project

#1 You need to get a twitter account - I can't emphasize how important this is for your small business.

#2 If you think you know few things about start-ups or your experiences and are ready to share them with the community, all you need do is;
a) Send your topic to my email, a short bio about yourself and why you think you are qualified to share ideas on this topic.
b) You are also required to send in 10 questions and answers in paragraph form to demonstrate your expertise (that's when you have been selected)

How Does #DearStartuper Work: You must have a twitter account to participate. And the chat holds every Sunday night 6pm-7pm GMT. Participants follow the chat using the hashtag #DearStartuper. In the last 10 minutes of every chat, all participants are invited to share something about what their business does and what they stand for in a tweet (ending each tweet with the hashtag #DearStartuper).

Transcript and Other Crazy Things: There will be a transcript of each chat on this blog on Mondays.
And every week (Thursdays)  I'd be doing a feature on a startuper where I'd review the start-up, what they stand for and what they are doing to create something that matters- the goal of this is to help new start-ups get early adopters. If you want your start-up to be featured on this blog, send me an email containing the name of your start-up, what you do and stand for, website links, what your USP is. And other information that you think we should know.

If You have any suggestions or ideas on how we can do this better kindly shoot me a mail at sadiqdaniel@gmail.com.

PS: We'd be launching this project on the first Sunday of March 2015... Tag along. Tell someone about this.

Are You Talking or Speaking?

Talk less and Speak more

People don't listen to what you are saying not because you are a bad person or don't have great things to say.

They don't listen because you were/are probably talking instead of speaking. *shocker alert* Forget about what your dictionary says about talking and speaking.... There is a huge difference between both of them and you need to know these significant differences as a person/entrepreneur that is willing to create something that matters.

Talking is cheap. Speaking isn't: You don't need to go out of your comfort zone to talk. All you have to do is say what everyone else is saying, doing it the way they are doing it... That's talking and that's the reason why people won't really listen to you - they've probably heard what you have to say somewhere else.

BUT

Speaking isn't all of that, Speaking is expensive. Speaking involves thinking real hard, doing a lot of research work before you pour out your mind. When you speak, you don't do it with the intent of pleasing everyone. You say things that challenges the status quo.

>>>Because talking is very cheap, it doesn't involve risk taking. People that talk think  when they do what everyone else is doing, one day they'd become popular. Yes, they may become popular because they are a few popular people that have spent all of their life taking.

But life is not a popularity contest. Life is all about changing lives by creating something that matters. And you can only do that by speaking.

Start talking less and start speaking more.

PS: Speaking is not for lazy minds and when you speak you might not get "big" results but it is definitely worth it because you are creating a culture that really matters.

What Are You Doing With Your Bathroom Ideas?

What are you doing with your bathroom ideas?
I spend an average of 30-35minutes in the bathroom every morning... The larger fraction of the time (say 20-30minutes) goes to what I call my "bathroom ideas".

Considering the fact that the bathroom is the only place where I can actually be naked and alone, I find it easier to reflect on my life, actions, restructure my goals. And once in a while crazy ideas pops in.

Many of us have similar experiences - we all tend to have bathroom ideas (except if you are an alien tho).

But what are we doing with these ideas? Are you flushing these ideas... Or do you let them go down the drain?

We need to start acting on these ideas. Don't underrate your bathroom. There is no better place to get ideas that will change the world if you ask me. I'm sure if you happen to ask Jeff Bezos or Seth Godin where they got most of their ideas from? They'd tell you it was in the bathroom.

Irrespective of where you even get ideas from- restaurants, bathroom, church, school and even in your sleep.... You need to act on them (no matter how crazy they may seem).

Do not write off any idea you get instead put it down in writing - that was what I did. I have a small 'pocket-sized' pad I carry anywhere I go because you never can tell where and when the next idea might come.

Then I assess all these ideas every week, pick out the best ones (the ones I think will help me create something that matters). At the end of the month, I pick one of my "best" ideas, focus on that one and make something happen with it.

Having great ideas doesn't make you special or you unique. And your ideas are useless if you don't put them to work. And there is nothing more painful than seeing someone transform one of bathroom ideas (you probably ignored) into something that matters.

You don't need the approval of people before you work one these ideas. In fact ideas that happens to change the world doesn't seem to make any sense at first.

Most of the ideas I put to work didn't work, but I did anyways. You should do same too...don't worry about the results, Just Do it!

Put your bathroom ideas to work today!

PS: I've got so many crazy ideas on start-ups and small business. I really don't want them to die because I can only work on a few at a time. So I'm willing to share these ideas with anyone interested. All you need to do is send me a mail or tweet @sadiqspeaks.

Monnie Writes: Love Is Not Enough

You might be wondering why all I talk about is love. Well, this is the month of love; finding love, rekindling love, growing love, blossoming love, sharing love. It’s all about love!
Then why is love not enough? We tend to weave dreams around us, we live and believe in these dreams, but when reality kicks in, then we find out that love is never enough.
It’s not wrong to dream. What is wrong is ignoring reality and grasping straws when it is evident that you are only deceiving yourself.
You meet a new person, who sweeps you off your feet, he is romantic, tells you sweet nothings, dines you, spends time with you. Oh! What a dream come true!
He takes you on a romantic getaway on a weekend, you are in the heavens. He fights the driver on the way over #100 change and you help him create an excuse for that. He doesn’t want to be cheated.
He beats up his sister over a gown he bought for you, which the sister took because she likes it. You say, he is only protecting my interest.
He slapped you around because he met a guy in your house and didn’t believe that the guy is only a friend. You say, I should know better than to have a male friend.
You ignored all the warning signs. You say, I love him.
Hello Sis, LOVE IS NOT AND NEVER ENOUGH TO GET ABUSED OVER!
Please wake up! He is violent and will never change. You will always find an excuse for every abuse you receive in that relationship. Love is not the only factor you use to determine or choose a partner. Love is not violent.
You need to sit down and ponder over exactly what you want in your dream man. Don’t settle for less. An abusive relationship is not healthy.

Why We Need To Make More Mistakes

It is a huge shame that the educational system we have is interested only in perfectionism - there is no tiny bit of allowance for mistakes. And this is really killing us.

I remember vividly the shit i went through during my high school days, you dare not score less than the pass mark (in most cases average of the total scores) if you don't want to be punished. And punishment in the part of world where I'm from involves  shooting whipping  you on the back or buttocks with cane till you scream out loud to the heavens. (We don't believe in detention or any of those things they do in Hollywood)

So we try as much as possible not to 'fail'. We cheat, pray, cram just to make the pass mark. And even outside school, our parents don't make things easier- instead of asking what went wrong and look for ways to fix them, they condemn and compare you with those that actually made the pass mark (and you'd be very lucky if that's the only thing they did).

It doesn't stop at that, it goes on and on till you graduate from college and even start working in a firm or on your own start-up.

This "mentality" of perfectionism and not giving room for mistakes is eating up our creativity.... We really need to re-orientate our inner minds that it is OK to make mistakes.

Perfectionism prevents us from moving out of our comfort zone and taking risks. It makes us feel as if we're falling short and therefore we never feel satisfied... And that's what is making the life of some miserable today.

As a young boy in his mid 20's I'm happy to admit I have made terrible mistakes and even ready to more- better ones. I've created 3 start-ups that all crashed. That doesn't make me a failure - mistakes doesn't make one a failure no matter how big they may seem. And that didn't stop me from taking more risks- even bigger ones... In fact I'm currently working on two start-ups right now.

We shouldn't make perfectionism our goal. Put resilience in its stead- the ability to make mistakes, learn from them and become a better person.

The only way light can get through a wall is when there is a crack. Do not be scared of trying out new things.

The only way you can make something happen is by being willing to take risks and taking risks means you are ready for mistakes.

It is very okay to make mistakes; learn from them when you make them and make better mistakes because that is the only way we can progress and move forward.

PS: Teachers should encourage mistakes (at least that is what school is meant for- to be better) in kids instead of punishing them. This will encourage/challenge them to try out new tasks and ask questions without feeling/appearing dumb.

Are You Surviving Or Living Life?

Is life meant to be survived or lived?

A straight forward is that life it is meant to be lived- that's what 99 percent (this statistics has not been proved) you ask will tell you.

But the irony is that these people (most of us) are not "living" instead "surviving" life.

Living life involves taking huge risks. Living means you don't give a pineapple about what people think about you. Living means making something out of what life throws at you. Living involves making mistakes, learning from them and making better mistakes.

But Living is not easy....

Living life is way beyond breathing in oxygen and giving out Carbon dioxide.

So instead of living (because it is difficult) we survive....

We take shit that life throws at us and suck it in. We are afraid of launching our idea because we don't know if they'd work, so we continue with the "9-5" jobs that is killing us.

But the bitter truth is that this "survival" is killing us, it is killing our dreams, our future, our everything.

Let us stop defending the status quo (surviving) and start championing brave innovations (living).

3 Great Blogs You Should Follow In 2015

I really want to make this article a very short one. Out of the blogs I followed last year, these 3 stood out... They really changed the way I see things and I thought it wise to share them here.

Here they are (in no order whatsoever) and what I love about them:

Seth Godin: I learnt a lot about how the process of doing things is the most important thing from this man. He shares marketing and business ideas and how ideas can be spread effectively. Seth Godin
Seth Godin
His articles are the shortest I've ever seen in the world but the content is crazily helpful. I have read two out his many books out there and I loved them.: Idea Virus, Linchpin.... Check out his blog here:

A Learning A Day: I actually got a link to this blog from seth's blog. Rohan shares his story and picks out lessons from them.A Learning A Day
Rohan
He is good. He makes mistakes and not afraid to admit to these mistakes. His articles are pretty long most times but they are worth your time. You should check the blog out -

Ofili Speaks: I must confess, I have been following this guys blog for over 3 years now and he has improved a lot. I love the way he writes and he is super creative.
Okechukwu Ofili
The way he uses sarcasm to deliver his messages is phenomenal. You should check him out - Ofili Speaks

FINAL NOTE: One mutual trait I discovered in these guys is that they are consistent and not afraid to make shit happen.

PS: I'd love to follow more blogs this year. You may share your blog link and other blogs you think are worth checking out.

3 Unconventional Tips On How To Stand Out In A Crowded Market

Everyone is making noise and it is very difficult to hear those that are speaking- those with quality content....

When I started blogging few years back, I encountered (still do) a lot of challenges with respect to getting traffic on my blog. Because my blog is not focused on what was/is "selling- entertainment/News/Gossip, it is kind of hard to get people on here.

There were times where I'd  kill myself write out my heart, share my articles across various social networking platforms- LinkedIn, Twitter,Facebook, Yet I wasn't getting the ROI I wanted. It took me a while to realize certain things (I wish I had known these things before I started blogging though) I am going to share with you guys.

Sit back, grab yourself a bowl of soup while you digest these unconventional tips on how to stand out in a crowded market.

#1 There is Nothing Wrong With What You Are Doing:
The fact that you are not doing what everyone else is doing doesn't mean there is something wrong with what your ideas or your goals. Neither does it mean there is no one ready to listen to you.

At some point I was tempted to switch to Gossips because nothing was really happening here. I was getting less than 5 page views per month. I was frustrated... But I never knew that the problem was not with what I was doing but with HOW I went about it. I started seeing results when I fixed the HOW (the process).

What I'm trying to say is that there is always a market for you regardless of what you are selling; Whether you are an artiste that  sings good music in a market where majority are interested in just noise and beats or a writer that is passionate about quality contents.

Even if it is only one out of 10,000 internet users that engages you, that is still hundreds of people.

#2 Don't Play With Consistency: Now that you know that there is a market for you regardless of what you are doing, you must be consistent. This was another huge mistake I made- I was never consistent with my writing so even the few followers I had on my blog left.

Don't joke with consistency. With consistency you make mistakes, learn from them and make better mistakes.

#3 Make a Lot of Noise About Your Work: Finally for you to stand out in a crowded market, you must be a noise-maker... For your voice to be heard or your idea to reach those that will really benefit from it, you need to make noise- tell people about what you are doing.

Scream about what you do, tell your friends to tell their friends to tell your friends. Amplify your voice by leveraging the social media....

When you combine these three tips, you will begin to see return on investment (the changes might not be magnanimous but you will see positive changes).

Just have it at the back of your mind that there is nothing wrong with your ideas. Not everyone will applaud you, mind you or even be aware that you exist. Don't flinch, Focus on that 1% that are interested in what you've got to offer.
